Key Considerations for Selecting Thermal Insulation Materials and Construction Application Standards

Click: Time:2026-05-28 09:29:11

The thermal insulation performance, service life and engineering safety of insulation materials depend not only on the inherent quality of the materials, but also on well-matched material selection and standardized construction procedures. Application scenarios vary widely, including construction projects, industrial equipment and municipal pipelines, with big differences in operating temperature, fire rating, ambient humidity and load-bearing requirements. Only accurate material selection and standardized construction can maximize the performance of insulation materials and prevent common engineering defects such as hollowing, cracking, falling off and substandard fire resistance.

Three core principles shall be followed for material selection: scenario compatibility, qualified performance, compliance and durability. First is temperature compatibility. For low-temperature applications such as cold storage, air conditioning pipelines and civil building insulation, organic insulation materials including polyurethane, XPS extruded board and EPS polystyrene board are preferred. Their ultra-low thermal conductivity helps maintain stable temperature in low-temperature environments. For high-temperature working conditions such as industrial kilns, steam pipelines and exhaust ducts of high-temperature equipment, inorganic high-temperature-resistant insulation materials such as rock wool, glass wool and aluminum silicate must be adopted to prevent deformation, carbonization and combustion of organic materials under high heat.

Second is fire rating compatibility. Class A non-combustible insulation materials must be selected in strict accordance with fire codes for fire-critical areas, such as building exterior walls, public buildings and industrial workshops, and illegal use of Class B combustible materials is prohibited. For indoor suspended ceilings, partition walls and ordinary auxiliary civil facilities, Class B1 and B2 flame-retardant materials can be selected per fire protection requirements to balance safety and cost-effectiveness. Meanwhile, for humid environments including basements, roofs and outdoor pipelines, insulation materials with high closed-cell rate and low water absorption are recommended. This prevents a sharp rise in thermal conductivity and insulation failure caused by water absorption.

For construction and installation, substrate treatment is the fundamental step. Before construction, the surfaces of walls, pipelines and equipment must be flat, dry, free of oil stains and loose debris. Uneven areas shall be leveled and repaired in advance. Poor substrate flatness will lead to poor adhesion of the insulation layer, resulting in gaps and hollowing. When installing bonded insulation boards, special adhesive mortar should be used to meet the required bonding area. Board joints must be tightly sealed with dedicated caulking materials to eliminate thermal bridges, reduce heat loss and prevent condensation and moisture on walls.

For fibrous insulation materials such as rock wool and glass wool, proper compaction and fixing are required during installation. Loose laying will cause insufficient thickness and settlement deformation later. Waterproof and moisture-proof protective layers must be equipped to avoid fiber caking and performance degradation due to moisture. Insulation for high-temperature equipment requires layered installation and staggered joints to form a uniform and continuous insulation layer without exposed areas. A high-temperature-resistant facing layer is also applied for better anti-aging and impact resistance.

In addition, acceptance and maintenance after insulation construction are critical. Inspect the insulation layer thickness, adhesion, fire stopping and surface integrity carefully to eliminate defects including cracks, detachment and gaps. For insulation works outdoors or in humid environments, finished product protection should be arranged against rain erosion and mechanical damage. Regular inspection and timely repair of damaged sections during operation can effectively extend the service life and sustain energy-saving insulation performance.

In conclusion, the engineering application of insulation materials is a systematic process covering material selection, construction and maintenance. Only scenario-based precise material selection, strict compliance with construction specifications and proper after-service maintenance can guarantee the quality of insulation projects and achieve long-term energy saving, safety and durability.
